Korean regulator set to penalise operators over subsidies

The South Korean telecommunications regulator plans to penalise mobile operators for excessive handset subsidies. Sources told Yonhap that the new mobile number portability record recently, of 128,176 porting applications between 26 and 28 October, is seen as a sign that the market is in overheated competition. The high mobile number portings are attributed to new plans offered by the operators as well as low handset prices. The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) plans to impose a business suspension of over two weeks on the company that is found to have led the illegal practice. The regulator imposed a business suspension of seven days on KT last year as well as a KRW 20.2 billion fine. SK Telecom and LG Uplus were fined KRW 36.4 billion and KRW 10.2 billion, respectively.
