KPN to start Wi-Fi pilot in IJburg in April

KPN will start 02 April the roll-out of its new Wi-Fi service operated in cooperation with Fon. The same as its cable rivals Ziggo and UPC, the company will open up home broadband customer routers for shared public access to Wi-Fi. By the end of this year, KPN aims to have 700,000 to 1 million routers activated for the service, the company told Telecompaper. The service will start with a trial in the Amsterdam neighbourhood of IJburg, with around 800-900 customers there asked to participate in a test for 6-8 weeks. Based on the results of the trial, the company will decide on the further expansion of the service to other areas. Eindhoven is expected to be part of the second phase of the roll-out.
