KPN to test LTE Broadcast
KPN will start testing LTE Broadcast technology in late 2013 or early 2014, the company said during the Media Park Annual Congress in Hilversum. The tests will be carried out together with Ericsson, amongst others. A KPN spokesman confirmed the plan. The technology enables video content to broadcast over the LTE network, allowing for an unlimited number of users per cell, in principle. The new technology was another reason why KPN started accelerating its rollout of LTE. The company aims to have LTE available nationwide by the end of Q1 2014. Other operators conducting tests with Ericsson include Telstra (Australia) and Verizon Wireless (US).

Wat awaits KPN in 2014? While a number of issues are well-know, we provide a few other possible scenarios for the Dutch incumbent. KPN has confirmed plans to start using 1,800 MHz band spectrum to raise the speed of its LTE network. In addition to its 800 MHz spectrum, the network will be able to reach theoretical speeds of 100 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload over LTE-1800. LTE Broadcast offers new opportunities

KPN was the first to roll out LTE in the Netherlands, the fourth generation of mobile technology. It recently announced that its nationwide roll-out will be completed around a quarter earlier than expected, in March 2014. It started initially with LTE in the 800 MHz band and will add spectrum in the 1800 and 2600 MHz bands to improve coverage in densely populated areas.

Tele2 Norway selects Ericsson for LTE rollout

Tele2 Norway has selected Ericsson for nationwide LTE rollout. Under the contract, Ericsson will also upgrade and expand Tele2's existing 2G and 3G networks in Norway, becoming the main vendor for the radio access systems for all standards. The deal includes multi-standard radio base station equipment from the Ericsson RBS 6000 family, LTE RAN software, upgrade of existing 2G and 3G access network software and upgrade of core systems. Services will also be a key part of the upgrade.

KPN is accelerating the rollout of its 4G network in the Netherlands, saying it will now reach nationwide coverage in the first quarter of next year, three months earlier ahead of schedule.
