Mexico plans to run 2.5 GHz band tender in Q3 2017

Mexico's Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) has announced that it plans to finally hold the tender of spectrum in the 2.5 GHz frequency band in the third quarter of this year. In a statement setting out its work plan for 2017, the regulator confirmed that 130MHz of spectrum in the 2.5 GHz band will be auctioned off after the authorities reach an agreement with the US on how to share the spectrum in border states.

The watchdog initially planned to hold the auction in the second half of 2016 but pushed back the process to increase participation following the completion of the shared network tender in November. Other plans on the IFT’s agenda include conducting an impact assessment on the shared network, finalising its review of asymmetric measures for dominant players and publishing 30 reports.
