Netflix is testing a new higher tier of service called ‘Ultra’ in Europe, allowing subscribers to receive Ultra HD (UHD) video and audio streaming simultaneously on up to four devices, reports Italian website Tutto Android. The fourth tier is priced at EUR 16.99 a month and would join the company’s three subscription plans Basic (EUR 7.99), Standard (EUR 10.99) and Premium (EUR 13.99).
Italian website PhoneArena noted that the new Ultra plan means Netflix halving the number of screens Premium subscribers can use simultaneously from four to two, while the Standard plan is downgraded to just one display. Spanish website ADSL Zone added that the Spanish Netflix subscription page also suggests the company is trialling the Ultra tier for EUR 16.99, which on occasion includes High Dynamic Range (HDR) quality streaming in addition to UHD.
In France, the Ultra plan is shown at as much as EUR 19.99 for certain users, including access on four screens and HDR, reports 01net.com. The Ulta plan also appeared in Poland, at PLN 63. That compares to the previous options Basic for PLN 34, Standard for PLN 43 and Premium for PLN 52, reported Telko.in. The options Premium and Ultra come with content in 4K, and the highest option allows watching content on four screens.
Netflix subsequently confirmed the trials, with a spokesperson clarifying that not all Netflix subscribers will see the test and the company may not ever offer the specific price points or features being tested. "We continuously test new things at Netflix and these tests typically vary in length of time," said the company in an email to Cnet, adding that "in this case, we are testing slightly different price points and features to better understand how consumers value Netflix."
