Nokia and SFR complete 5G New Radio call using 3.5 GHz spectrum

Nokia and SFR have completed what they say is the first mobile call to be made in France over 3.5 GHz spectrum under the 5G New Radio (5G NR) standard. The over-the-air test was conducted on 03 May at Nokia’s Paris-Saclay campus. Using a similar set-up to the recent trial conducted by Nokia with Verizon, the call was completed on 3GPP-compliant test devices over Nokia’s 5G-ready AirScale cloud-based RAN, running on its AirFrame data center solution.

SFR Caraibe announces 800 Mbps LTE service, completes 5G test in Martinique

Altice France's SFR Caraibe subsidiary announced that from the end of September, its customers in Martinique will benefit from the roll-out of a faster LTE-A service, delivering a theoretical speed of 800 Mbps. Branded 4G Max, it will be initially available on compatible devices to 12.5 percent of the island's population. The operator said that this latest network upgrade uses tri-band carrier aggregation (800/1,800/2,600 MHz spectrum), 4x4 MIMO, and 256 QAM modulation.

SFR and Huawei complete 5G test in Guadaloupe

SFR announced that it has achieved a peak speed of 1.4 Gbps during its first 5G test carried out in Guadaloupe, where it operates under the SFR Caraibe brand on what was known as Outremer Telecom's network. The demonstration was completed with radio equipment supplied by Huawei, using a massive MIMO antenna in a 64-transmit/64-receive configuration.

SFR to test 5G in Toulouse and Nantes

SFR has been authorised by French regulator Arcep to expand its 5G testing using 3.5 GHz spectrum to the cities of Toulouse and Nantes. In May, the operator announced the completion of what it described as the first mobile call to be made in France under the 5G New Radio (5G NR) standard. In a separate test, it achieved a peak speed of 1.6 Gbps at its research lab in Velizy (Ile-de-France), using 5G equipment supplied by Huawei.

Orange to expand 5G testing to Marseille

Orange has received the green light from French regulator Arcep to carry out 5G tests on 3.5 GHz spectrum in the city of Marseille, using equipment provided by Nokia. Earlier this year, it announced that it had chosen Lille and Douai as the first locations for end-to-end 5G testing, starting in mid-2018 using Ericsson's equipment.

SFR passes 83,000 new premises with fibre in April

SFR's fibre network passed an additional 83,000 new premises across 83 French municipalities during April, including hybrid fibre-coaxial and FTTP services. French regulator Arcep has launched a public consultation to gather stakeholders' views on a number of topics relating to how 26 GHz spectrum can be made available for 5G services. Deutsche Telekom activates first 5G antenna sites in downtown Berlin

Deutsche Telekom has activated a set of six commercial 5G antennas in downtown Berlin as it continues to prepare for the roll-out of 5G in 2020.
