Nokia unveils 41-megapixel Lumia 1020 smartphone
Nokia announced the new Nokia Lumia 1020 smartphone, available first from the US carrier AT&T from 26 July. The Windows smartphone with LTE and advanced camera features will cost USD 299.99 with a two-year contract and come in black, white and yellow versions. Customers can pre-order beginning 16 July. The phone will launch later this quarter in China and Europe, and Telefonica will distribute an exclusive version of the phone in select European and Latin American markets.

The Lumia 1020 features a 41 megapixel sensor, which Nokia claims is the largest back side illuminated (BSI) sensor available on a smartphone. Other imaging features include optical image stabilisation, Zeiss optics with a 6-lens design, manual shutter, xenon flash for images and LED flash for video and HD video recording at 1080p at 30 fps with up to 4x zoom. It also comes with pre-installed tutorials on how to take better pictures and access to the online Nokia Photo Masters class. In addition to a range of editing features for each 38-megapixel image taken, the phone automatically makes a 5 megapixel copy of each photo to facilitate easy sending. 

The 4.5-inch Amoled PureMotion HD+ display (1280x768 pixels) is made with Gorilla Glass 3, and the phone comes with 32GB internal storage. In addition it will be the first Windows phone to include AT&T Locker, the operator's free cloud storage app. For a limited time, customers who purchase a Nokia Lumia 1020 can get 50 GB of free cloud storage. Other features of the phone include a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, 2,000 mAh battery, 2 GB RAM, 1.2 megapixel front camera, 7GB free on Microsoft's SkyDrive, and Nokia's navigation and music services.

The phone will be sold with an attachable leather wrist strap, and the Nokia Camera Grip accessory can be purchased separately for USD 79, offering extra battery power, shutter button and a universal tripod mount. Nokia is also releasing a SDK for developers to incorporate the Lumia 1020's imaging features in their apps. Path, Hipstamatic, Vyclone, Snapcam, Panagraph, Yelp, CNN and Foursquare are some of the developers using the SDK already. Nokia also announced that versions of the personal magazine app Flipboard and video service Vine will be coming to Windows Phone soon.

Nokia continued to show improvement in its underlying results in the second quarter, meeting its outlook for stronger sales of its Lumia smartphones and a small operating loss at its main handset division. Nokia offers peek at new Lumia smartphone

Nokia has launched a teaser video on its website for the Lumia 928, a smartphone expected to launch in the US with Verizon Wireless. While Nokia offered few details on the handset, it is expected to say more at an event planned for 14 May in London.
