Satellite communications company OneWeb, which is jointly owned by the UK government and Bharti Global, has secured additional funding from Hughes Network Systems and SoftBank. This brings total funding raised to USD 1.4 billion.
The investment will see SoftBank take a seat on the OneWeb board. Hughes Network Systems is making the investment through parent company EchoStar, also an ecosystem partner, developing ground network technology for the OneWeb system.
Meanwhile, OneWeb has reduced its LEO satellite constellation plans by lowering its request for US market access from 47,884 to 6,372 satellites. Combined with the satellites already licensed by the FCC, OneWeb's total constellation size will be around 7,000, down from the around 48,000 proposed in 2020.
