BBK Electronics brand Oppo has officially unveiled its first self-designed imaging NPU as well as an “assisted reality” device called Air Glass at its annual technology event in Shenzhen. The company’s new in-house imaging NPU (Neural Processing Unit) is called MariSilicon X and is based on the 6nm manufacturing process. It’s above all designed to significantly enhance the quality of photos and videos on Oppo’s smartphone cameras, starting with the next-generation flagship Find X series due to be launched in the first quarter of next year.
The MariSilicon X chip features its own ISP and supports 20-bit, 120db dynamic range in images as well as real-time RAW processing in 4K AI Night Video with live preview. Oppo said the NPU can run various algorithms for noise reduction, ultra HDR, improved dynamic range and better colour performance, among other features.
Separately, Oppo announced the Air Glass product, an AR (“Assisted Reality”) monocle that projects 2D information into the wearer’s field of view. It weighs just 30 grams and comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4100 processor, self-developed Spark Micro Projector, Micro LED and a diffraction optical waveguide display. Potential uses apart from notifications and directions include teleprompting and real-time translation, said Oppo.
The device will be launched in black or white, along with two custom frame accessories, and will initially be available as a limited release in mainland China in Q1 2022.
