Orange announced a new pilot in the city of Marseille, open to users recruited to test 5G. The operator has installed a 5G antenna in the Velodrome football stadium, which was renamed Orange Velodrome in 2016 under a 10-year branding agreement. The service is now live in parts of the stadium and will be used to showcase the capabilities of 5G to an invited audience on Sunday, when the city’s team will be playing against Olympique Lyonnais.
This audience will be shown 360 degree live video streaming in 8K quality. It will also be able to experience the match in virtual reality. Alongside this demonstration, organised with Kariba Production, another one will take place in collaboration with start-up Augmented Acoustics, showing how viewers can choose from a selection of different audio feeds.
The 5G antenna installed at the stadium is one of the 70+ already in place across the Marseille metropolitan areas, where Orange is carrying out trials on 3.5 GHz spectrum. The operator has also recently announced a new wave of testing using the 26 GHz band.
