Orange secures licence to launch LTE services in Burkina Faso

Orange Burkina Faso announced on Twitter that it has acquired a mobile licence that will enable the operator to offer 4G+ services. The news follows a decision from the government to approve the introduction of technology-neutral licences, allowing operators to use their spectrum resources for LTE, as well as 2G/3G networks.

CEO Ben Cheick Haidara, as quoted by Agence Ecofin, said that the new mobile licence will cost Orange Burkina Faso XOF 80 billion, of which half has already been paid. The rest will be given in two instalments.

The operator was the leading provider of mobile internet services according to the most recent report from the country’s telecom regulator, holding a 49.3 percent share of mobile internet connections in Q3 2017 ahead of rival Onatel with 45.7 percent.
