Samsung tells customers to stop using Note 7
Samsung Electronics has told customers with its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone to no longer use the phone and turn it in for a new device. The company confirmed it is working with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to recall the phones after discovering battery cell issues. Tim Baxter, president of Samsung Electronics America, said the company was asking users "to power down their Galaxy Note7s and exchange them now".

Similar warnings were issued around the world. In Germany, Samsung told customers to "turn off the device and not use it" anymore. Samsung promised to issue replacement devices by 19 September to the affected customers.

In the US, replacement devices will be issued to exchange program participants upon completion of the CPSC process. In the interim, consumers can return their Note 7 for another device, such as the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge. Some operators and retailers will also offer customers a phone on loan until a replacement Note 7 is available. Additionally, participants in the US exchange program will receive a USD 25 gift card or bill credit from carriers and retail outlets.

According to Korean media reports, Samsung has turned to an outside source for replacement batteries for the Note 7. Most of the original batteries were from its own subsidiary. Industry sources told Yonhap News Agency that the company has ordered around 4 million new batteries from China's ATL to use as replacements in the Note 7 smartphones.
