Qualcomm announced an expanded licensing and technology agreement with Samsung. In exchange, Samsung will withdraw its interventions in Qualcomm's appeal against competition fines in South Korea.
Qualcomm said the global patent cross-license agreement with Samsung covers mobile devices and infrastructure equipment, extending its existing supply role with the world's biggest smartphone maker. The changes to the agreement with Samsung are consistent with Qualcomm’s global handset-level licensing practices, the company added.
Qualcomm Technologies and Samsung Electronics also announced a multi-year strategic relationship agreement "in various technology areas and across a range of mobile devices". This deal expands the companies’ longstanding relationship as technology and business partners this year and beyond, through the transition to 5G, Qualcomm said. Further details of the cooperation were not disclosed.
The peace agreement with Samsung follows Qualcomm accusing Apple of working against the chipmaker by collaborating with competition authorities in various countries. Apple has been refusing royalties to Qualcomm, including from its sub-contractors, since last year as part of a dispute with the company over licensing fees.
