Sky close to fibre broadband investment deal with Virgin Media O2 - report

Sky is in talks to invest in Virgin Media O2's full-fibre broadband roll-out, reports The Sunday Telegraph newspaper. The newly-merged company plans to upgrade 14 million UK premises to ultrafast broadband to challenge the market dominance of BT.

Virgin Media O2 is also understood to be holding separate talks TalkTalk and Vodafone about them becoming wholesale customers of its network.

Virgin Media unveils first Wi-Fi 6 broadband router

Virgin Media has unveiled its first Wi-Fi 6 broadband router, the new Hub 5, working on Docsis 3.1. The Hub 5 supports multi-gigabit speeds and comes with a 2.5 Gbps ethernet port alongside three additional 1 Gbps ports. The device is made from 100 percent post-consumer recycled plastic, under the company's goal to achieve net-zero carbon operations by the end of 2025.

Liberty Global Ventures, the investment arm of cable group Liberty Global, has set up a joint venture with private equity firm InfraVia Capital Partners to build FTTH networks in Germany. The venture will initially target small number of municipalities in Germany and potentially continue with investments in a second phase if targets are met. The companies each own a 50 percent stake in the JV, which remains subject to regulatory approval.
