Sony intros Xperia XZ Premium with 4K HDR, gigabit LTE
Sony has unveiled its new flagship smartphone, the Xperia XZ Premium at Mobile World Congress. The new device focuses on Sony's technological advances, with camera functions such as slow-motion playback, a 4K HDR display and LTE at up to 1 Gbps.

Expected to launch in late Spring, the Xperia XZ Premium runs Qualcomm's latest high-end processor, the Snapdragon 835, with the X16 LTE modem supporting up to 1 Gbps. The 5.5-inch display supports 2160 x 3840p resolution, a first in smartphones, according to Sony. This uses Sony’s Bravia TV technology to support 4K HDR viewing, and Amazon Prime Video will provide a selection of 4K HDR content for the Sony phone.

The new Mobile Eye Camera system features a memory-stacked Exmor RS sensor with technologies usually only found on premium compact cameras for faster image scanning and data transfer. Users can record videos in 960 frames per second and play back the video in 'Super slow motion' to catch more detail. The Predictive Capture feature automatically starts buffering images when it detects motion even before pressing the button, providing a selection of up to four shots taken a second before clicking.

In addition to the 19 megapixel rear camera, the XZ Premium comes with a USB 3.1 connection and USB Type-C socket as well as the Quick Charger UCH12Wix which Sony says offers hours of battery after just a few minutes charging. The Sony XZ Premium is also dust- and water-resistant, with Corning Gorilla Glass 5, and comes with Sony's native DSEE HX technology to up-scale music to near high-resolution audio.

As is traditional with Sony, the XZ Premium will also be available in a smaller version. The Xperia XZs, available in select markets from early April, features a 5.2-inch full HD display, the Motion Eye camera system and a fingerprint sensor integrated in the power button. The metal-back phone will be available in Ice Blue, Warm Silver and Black, while the Xperia XZ Premium comes in Luminous Chrome and Deepsea Black.
