TCL launches first own-brand smartphone at IFA

China-based TCL Communication, maker of Alcatel, Blackberry and Palm devices, has unveiled its first own-brand smartphone at IFA 2019. The 'TCL Plex' smartphone is a mid-range handset with a large 6.53-inch display that will be launched in select European markets next month at a recommended retail price of EUR 329. It has a 90 percent screen-to-body ratio and a processor that upconverts all SDR content on the display into HDR.

It comes with three rear cameras, including a main 48-megapixel lens, as well as a 24-megapixel front facing camera. TCL said the Plex has the ability to integrate auto-brightness, de-noising, super resolution, HDR and more into a single AI model in the camera's auto mode. This results in a night shot capability that’s “up to 3 times brighter” in the darkest environments.

It also features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 processor, 6 GB of DRAM, 128 GB of expandable storage and a 3,820 mAh battery with quick charge. Additional hardware includes a ‘smart key’ on the side of the phone that can be customised in 3 different ways – single, double and long press – to access various mobile apps or commonly used features.
