LG has unveiled its latest G series smartphone at IFA 2019 in Berlin, an upgraded G8 with a secondary display case called the LG G8XThinQ. The device comes with a second screen case that’s the same size as the phone’s primary 6.4-inch FHD+ display, allowing users to activate a second display from settings. Both screens are 6.4-inch OLED FHD+ with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and both have notches, with the second screen also featuring a 2.1-inch monochrome OLED cover display. The 'freestop' hinge offers full 360-degree tilt freedom, said LG.
In terms of hardware, the G8X has the same Snapdragon 855 processor and 6GB RAM as its predecessor but with the fingerprint sensor located under the display rather than on the back. It ships with Android 9 and has an improved battery capacity of 4,000 mAh.
The device's camera has a 12-megapixel standard angle lens with optical image stabilisation (OIS) and a 13-megapixel wide-angle camera on the back plus a 32MP front shooter. Software features include 'AI Action Shot', which recognises and compensates movement with a shutter speed of 1/480 of a second to keep subjects fully in focus.
In terms of sound, the G8X has the same 32-bit quad DAC and 3.5mm headphone jack as the G8, plus a 1.2W driver on the top and the bottom of the handset.
The G8X ThinQ and Dual Screen will be available in key markets in the fourth quarter, with pricing to be announced in due course.
