Telefonica mulls sale of Irish mobile unit – report

Telefonica is considering the sale or merger of its Irish business after receiving expressions of interest from potential buyers, the Financial Times reports, citing unnamed sources. The potential sale of O2 Ireland, the country’s second-largest mobile group, is expected to raise around EUR 700 million for Telefonica.

Telefonica has received “expressions of interest” in the Irish mobile operator, said one person with knowledge of the situation. He added that the group was willing to consider the offers. Interested parties include Hong Kong’s Hutchison Whampoa.

Another informed person cautioned that there was no sale process, and no guarantee that Telefonica would seek a deal.
