TikTok reaches milestone of 1 bln monthly users

TikTok announced that it's passed the milestone of 1 billion monthly active users around the world. The achievement puts it in a small group of apps with such an audience, including Telegram and WhatsApp. TikTok attributed the growth to the "creativity and authenticity of our creators", who are able to reach "millions of people, across generations".

The announcement coincides with the first 'TikTok World' event, a virtual conference with partners to discuss TikTok's marketing and commerce opportunities for businesses.

Telegram attracts over 70 mln new users during Facebook's outage

Messaging app Telegram gained over 70 million new users during Facebook's outage on 4 October, CEO Pavel Durov told Reuters. Facebook blamed its 6-hour long outage on faulty configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between its data centres, causing issues that interrupted its communication. The glitch affected 3.5 billion users of services such as WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.

Instagram short-video service Reels coming to Facebook mobile apps

Facebook is expanding the Instagram feature Reels to the Facebook Android and iOS mobile apps, offering a new way to post and watch short videos on the social network. First launched in August 2020 for Instagram, Reels allows users to record and edit 15-second videos with a range of audio and visual effects. The 'reels' can then be shared with followers or as a story, or be put to the wider social media audience through public accounts.

Telegram has passed over 1 billion downloads worldwide, according to research SensorTower. It is just the 15th app to have achieved such a milestone, the market researcher said. The news comes as the company launched another major update, Telegram 8.0.

TikTok is changing its default privacy settings for teens, following criticism from regulators and public interest groups and similar changes at Google and Facebook for their apps. The new features target 13-17 year-olds, in an attempt to raise their awareness on the importance of online privacy. Default settings will become stricter, but they will still have the option to change these, requiring an active choice.

TikTok removes over 89 mln videos in H2

TikTok's Transparency Report for H2 2020 shows that it removed 89.130 million videos globally in the period for violating its Community Guidelines or Terms of Service, which is less than 1 percent of all videos uploaded on TikTok. Of these videos, 11.78 million were removed in the US alone. Some 6.14 million accounts were removed for violating its Community Guidelines.

TikTok is strengthening privacy for youth on the platform by setting the the default privacy setting for all registered accounts aged 13-15 to private. This means that only some approved by the user can follow their account. The change takes effect from 13 January.
