Republican Senator Marco Rubio has filed papers in court to stop certain companies on watch lists from seeking damages in US patent courts, Reuters reported, citing an amendment to the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a bill that sets spending policy by the Department of Defense. Under the amendment, companies on certain US government watch lists would not be allowed to bring legal action over patent infringement, or to in general seek relief under US law with respect to US patents.
The senator made the move after reports came out that Huawei was seeking over USD 1 from Verizon Communications to settle a patent licensing dispute. Huawei reportedly wants Verizon to pay licensing fees for more than 230 of its patents, according to the claim.
