Huawei is in the process of potentially launching its own Hongmeng operating system (OS), set to replace the Android OS, public affairs and communications VP Andrew Williamson told Reuters in an interview. He said the company will “presumably” trademark its new OS.
The company already applied to trademark Hongmeng in a number of countries according to data from the World Intellectual Property Organization. According to a report in business daily El Comercio, Huawei applied to register the term ‘Hongmeng’ for a mobile operating system in Peru.
Huawei is creating its own OS following a US government ban on Huawei's access to technology from US companies like Google, the company behind Android OS.
Williamson said that Hongmeng would be ready to go “in months” in case trade tensions escalate into a full-blown trade war.
