Mexican operator Virgin Mobile has reached an agreement with Facebook to launch the Free Basics platform in the South American country. The partners said the Free Basics app and portal, previously called Internet.org, will give Mexican users free access to around 40 websites and services such as Facebook, Messenger, Wikipedia, Accuweather, BBC World, BabyCenter&Mama, CREA and 1doc3, among others.
Facebook's Internet.org service, since renamed Free Basics, was launched with the aim of allowing free internet browsing over mobile devices in regions with low internet access rates. The service has already been unveiled in five other Latin American countries: Colombia, Paraguay, Guatemala, Peru and Panama.
