Vodafone Spain has announced that it will launch 4G services on 29 May. The operator will start the service in seven cities, namely Barcelona, Bilbao, Madrid, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Seville and Valencia. Vodafone’s LTE service offering up to 150 Mbps downloads and up to 50 Mbps uploads will use the 1.8 GHz and 2.6 GHz, until the 800 MHz band is freed up to accelerate the LTE rollout with improved in-building coverage.
At launch, the service will cover 55 percent of the population of each city. By the end of the summer, the operator aims to have upgraded 1,000 base stations in the seven cities, raising outdoor coverage to 85 percent and indoor coverage to 60 percent.
The LTE service will be included in the Vofafone Red3, Vodafone Red Pro3 and higher plans, as well as in the 10GB Mobile Internet plan for businesses and consumers. For the remainder of subscriptions, 4G will cost an additional EUR 9 a month, after a free promotional period until the end of September. Vodafone is backing the launch with a major TV, press and online ad campaign under the slogan “The fastest network is becoming faster than ever”.
