Xiaomi upgrades Mi 9 smartphone for 5G market in China

Xiaomi has released its second 5G smartphone, designed to work across all bands used for 5G in the Chinese market. An upgrade of the Mi 9 released earlier this year, the Mi 9 Pro 5G phone comes with a faster processor, bigger battery with improved wireless charging and broadband speeds of up to 1.78 Gbps.

The phone's Snapdragon 855+ processor from Qualcomm comes with three CPU core clusters, increasing its prime core clock speed to 2.96 GHz compared to 2.84 GHz on the standard Snapdragon 855. The enhanced version of the Adreno 640 graphics chip enables a 15 percent increase in performance compared to the Snapdragon 855. The Mi 9 Pro 5G also sports the industry’s most efficient vapor chamber, Xiaomi claims, to reduce the processor’s core temperature by 10.2 degrees C.

With 40W fast wired charging, the phone promises a full charge in just 48 minutes. It also supports enhanced 30W fast wireless charging and high-power 10W wireless reverse charging with the 4,000mAh battery.

The Mi 9 Pro includes the triple camera debuted on the Mi 9 and the 6.39-inch FHD+ Amoled 'dot drop' display. The device also is equipped with enhanced touch haptic feedback, and the MIUI offers over 150 interactive haptic feedback modules for typing, gestures, camera zoom, and fingerprint recognition as well as gaming thanks to a collaboration with CrossFire. Xiaomi also expanded the NFC functionality to activities such as eID airport and smart hotel check-in as well as keyless vehicle entry with XPeng motors.

The Mi 9 Pro 5G retails for CNY 3,699 (EUR 474), CNY 3,799, CNY 4,099 and CNY 4,299 respectively for 8GB+128GB, 8GB+256GB, 12GB+256GB and 12GB+512GB. A 30W fan-cooled wireless charging stand is available for CNY 199.

MIUI 11 adds office apps

Xiaomi also unveiled the latest version of its MIUI at the event. The open beta of MIUI 11 starts 27 September in China and introduces a new font and dynamic font scaling feature, dynamic sounds effects that resemble ambient sounds from nature and two new suites of office apps - Mi Work for file sharing, large document transfer, smart screen cast and wireless printing, and the smart travel assistant Mi Go. In addition, the new user interface introduces extreme power saving mode, which allows for a stand-by time of up to 24 hours with only 5 percent battery life.

4K Full screen TV

Also new is the Mi Full Screen TV Pro series, building on Xiaomi's strong growth in TV sales in China. The new TV adopts a 4K panel in an aluminum frame and carbon-fibre patterned back and features a screen-to-body ratio of up to 97 percent. It's powered by a 12nm Amlogic T972 processor with a quad-core A55 architecture (up to 1.9GHz) and features 2GB+32GB storage and support for 8K video playback (in 4K output).

Mi Full Screen TV Pro is available in 43, 55 and 65 inch models, priced at CNY 1,499, CNY 2,399 and CNY 3,399, respectively. Pre-orders start 24 September, and open sales via Xiaomi official sales channels start 27 September.
