Vodafone and Liberty Global: consolidation to continue regardless

Vodafone and Liberty Global have been in talks for several months about a possible partial or full merger of their activities. They confirmed the talks in June, but recent media reports suggest they are struggling to reach an agreement. Both appear to want the UK activities, Vodafone because the UK is its home market and Liberty Global for the fiscal benefits of losses at Virgin Media. Liberty reportedly also wants to stay in the Netherlands, while Vodafone would get Germany.
