3 Denmark plans commercial 5G launch by end-2020, runs tests in Roskilde and Amager

3 Denmark said it will start offering 5G services commercially on the 700 MHz and 1,800 MHz bands at the end of 2020. It has reached up to 1.00 Gbps in trials of the 3.5 GHz band on Amager and is also piloting what it calls "5G light" in Roskilde.

The mobile operator is testing a closed 5G network of 20 masts using the 1,800 MHz frequency band in Roskilde city centre. The aim of the trials is to explore the technical set-up once 3 Denmark offers commercial 5G, said Stefan Ring Stohrmann, head of radio networks.

Stohrmann said the company is experimenting with getting 4G and 5G to work together on its spectrum. He said 4G will remain its most extensive technology for some time and demand for LTE capacity keeps rising.

Combining 4G and 5G, 3 Denmark expects to be able to offer customer internet service at up to 300 Mbps, depending on location and equipment. It said that an earlier test of the 3.5 GHz band in Copenhagen's southern port had achieved 1.5 Gbps. Stohrmann said this makes 5G a contender to xDSL, TV cable and fibre in terms of cost-effectiveness and sustainability.
