America Movil handed MXN 96.8 mln antitrust fine

Mexican telecommunications regulator IFT has fined America Movil and its mobile subsidiary Telcel a total of MXN 96.8 million pesos (around USD 5.4 million) for breaching competition rules as a result of an exclusivity contract signed with local firm Blue Label Mexico. Specifically, the IFT said its board unanimously decided to fine America Movil and Telcel for “reaching exclusivity agreements with Blue Label Mexico that prevented the company from marketing or providing airtime for Telcel’s competitors in the mobile telephone service”.

Blue Label specialises in the provision of technical and banking support to retail businesses in Mexico and owns 75,000 point of sales terminals across the country. America Movil said it will examine the IFT’s allegations and challenge them in accordance with law.
