Kantar blamed the decline on the increasingly saturated market, with only 25 percent of smartphones sold in the three-month period acquired by first-time smartphone buyers. This means churn is having more of an impact on market shares, especially for Android. Kantar estimates that 27 percent of smartphone buyers across Europe left Android for iOS during the period. Apple gained market share in all five markets in the period, and Windows' share increased in four out of five of the European markets.
Kantar's figures also show Android losing out to Apple in other major markets around the world, with its share down 10.5 percent points in Australia, 5.5 points in China and 7.0 points in Japan compared to a year earlier. In the US, the picture was different, with Android''s share up 1.7 points year-on-year to 65.6 percent, and Apple's share falling 1.3 points to 30.1 percent. Kantar estimates that Samsung and Apple alone accounted for 64 percent of smartphones sold in the three months in the US.
