Android takes 68% of smartphone market in Q2
Google's Android and Apple's iOS systems powered 85 percent of all smartphones shipped in the second quarter 2012, according to IDC. Android took a 68.1 percent market share of all smartphones shipped during the quarter, equal to 104.8 million phones shipped, while Research In Motion's Blackberry and Nokia's Symbian systems saw their market shares drop to respectively 4.8 percent and 4.4 percent. Android's success in the market was largely due to Samsung, which comprised 44 percent of all Android smartphones shipped in Q2. iOS posted double-digit growth, securing its spot as the number two operating system with a 16.9 percent share. Blackberry reached share levels not seen since the first quarter 2009, and Symbian saw a market share drop of 62.9 percent, the sharpest drop year-over-year in company history. Microsoft's Windows and Linux operating systems remain distant competitors to Android and iOS, with respectively 3.5 and 2.3 percent of shipments in Q2.
