Nokia drops from top-5 smartphone makers in Q3
Nokia dropped from the world's top-five smartphone makers in the third quarter, according to research by IDC. Samsung cemented its lead with an estimated 31.3 percent market share, followed by Apple with 15.0 percent. Research in Motion, ZTE and HTC, all with around 4 percent, rounded out the top five smartphone makers. IDC estimates the total smartphone market comprised 179.7 million phones in Q3, up 45.3 percent from a year earlier. The total mobile phone market worldwide was up just 2.4 percent to an estimated 444.5 million units. Nokia was still number two in the overall market, although its share fell sharply to 18.7 percent in Q3 from 24.5 percent a year ago. Samsung grew its share to 23.7 percent, shipping an estimated 105.4 million phones versus 87.2 million a year earlier. Apple was in third place with a market share of 6.1 percent, followed by LG and ZTE each with 3.1 percent.
