Apple unveils iPhone 4S

Apple has unveiled the latest version of the iPhone. The iPhone 4S features the earlier announced update to Apple's operating system, iOS 5, which comes with the new service iMessage for messaging and e-mail among Apple devices and the iCloud storage service. Other new features of the iPhone include the dual-core A5 processor, HSPA up to 14.4Mbps, a dual-antenna system, improved battery with up to eight hours of talk time over 3G, and the 'intelligent assistant' called Siri to accomplish basic tasks on the phone through voice commands. An improved 8 megapixel camera comes with 1080p HD video recording, additional editing tools, access to the camera from the lock screen and integration with iMessage, Twitter and iCloud to send and sync photos. 

The iPhone 4S will go on sale in black and white models on 14 October in the US with AT&T and Verizon as well as the new carrier Sprint, for USD 199 for the 16GB model, USD 299 for 32GB and USD 399 for the new 64GB version. It will be available from the same date in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK, with pre-sales starting on 7 October. Another 22 countries will get the new device by the end of October, including Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. 

The iOS 5 update will be released on 12 October as a free upgrade for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch customers. Siri will initially be available only in English (with local versions for the US, UK, Australia), French and German as a beta service. iOS 5 comes with 5GB of free storage on iCloud for mail, documents and device backup. Music, TV shows, apps, books and the new Photo Stream service, which syncs photos taken across Apple devices, do not count against the storage limit. The iTunes Match service, which converts music files for iTunes use, will be available starting in the US later this month for USD 24.99 a year. Additional iCloud storage costs USD 20 a year for 10GB, USD 40 for 20GB and USD 100 a year for 50GB. Apple also announced price cuts for earlier iPhone models, with the iPhone 4 available for USD 99 and the iPhone 3GS free with two-year contracts.
