Austrian regulator confirms start of 5G mobile frequency auction

The first auction of frequencies for 5G mobile services in Austria has started, a spokesperson for telecoms regulator RTR has confirmed to DerStandard. The date was kept secret for security reasons and to stop the mobile network operators from colluding. 

The government is expected to raise around EUR 50 million from this auction of 3.4-3.8 GHz frequencies. The three leading mobile operators A1, T-Mobile Austria and 3 Austria are all believed to be bidding. In 2020, the Austrian government plans to auction off more frequencies in the 700, 1,500 and 2,100 MHz bands.

Austria's RTR issues draft security regulation for 5G networks

Austrian regulator RTR has drafted a new regulation to establish minimum security standards for the telecommunications infrastructure, and in particular for 5G. The document was developed in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Regions and Tourism (BMLRT), and it is now open for consultation. The new security regulation for telecommunication networks is planned to enter into force in June.

Austrian regulator RTR has closed the auction for regional licences for frequencies in the 5G pioneer bands 3.4-3.8 GHz, with seven successful bidders who will pay a total of around EUR 188 million for the licences. The next step will be the auction of multi-band licences in spring 2020.

Austrian regulator RTR has opened the first consultation on the multi-band auction for 5G frequencies in the 700/1500/2100 MHz bands planned for the first quarter of 2020.
