Austria's RTR issues draft security regulation for 5G networks

Austrian regulator RTR has drafted a new regulation to establish minimum security standards for the telecommunications infrastructure, and in particular for 5G. The document was developed in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Regions and Tourism (BMLRT), and it is now open for consultation. The new security regulation for telecommunication networks is planned to enter into force in June.  

The 5G networks involve a higher level of technological complexity. Therefore, RTR has codified in one document existing international and European security standards as well as effective security management measures for the operation of 5G networks. RTR will monitor compliance with the security standards. Moreover, operators are required to provide RTR with information in order to be able to take measures immediately in the event of security incidents.

The number of fixed broadband connections in Austria providing 30 to 100 Mbps speeds rose by 28 percent in 2020, according to the internet monitor study conducted by regulator RTR. RTR consults on 5-year spectrum plan

The Austrian regulator RTR said it has started a consultation plans to assign radio frequencies over the next five years (2021-2026). The regulator conducts the consultation in coordination with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Regions and Tourism (BMLRT). The authorities aim to provide planning security for all stakeholders.

Austrian regulators conduct first roundtable to ensure functioning, competitive mobile market

Austrian regulator RTR and the Federal Competition Authority (BWB) have held the first roundtable to discuss perspectives for competition in the market for mobile communications. RTR and BWB expect that the next eight weeks until 17 May will be used to conduct intensive discussions between MNOs and MVNOs whose negotiations have previously faltered. The regulators expect to receive a report from the negotiating partners on 17 May. Progress reports are analysed by RTR and BWB.

Austrian voice, data traffic continues higher in Q2

Austrian operator A1 reached a share of 39.9 percent of the mobile communications market in the second quarter, followed by Magenta Telekom with 25.3 percent and Hutchison Drei with 23.6 percent, according to the latest Telecommunications Monitor report published by the regulator RTR. MVNO Hot ranked fourth in terms of market share with 6.7 percent, followed by Spusu with 2.2 percent.

Austrian municipality of Flattach issues ordinance against 5G expansion

The council of the municipality of Flattach in the state of Carinthia in Austira has issued an ordinance against the expansion of the 5G network, Kleinen Zeitung reports. According to the report, the municipality wants to stop the construction of 5G due to health concerns. The expansion should be suspended until it can be proven that 5G does not cause any damage to human or animal health, the city said.

RTR opens only 28 net neutrality cases in a year

Austria regulator RTR said that it conducted 28 proceedings against network operators for possible net neutrality violations in the period 01 May 2019 to 30 April 2020, and only one led to the shut down of a network service. RTR published its annual report on the state of internet in Austria and noted that the overall market picture in Austria remains positive.

Austrian regulator RTR said that it has set the second half of August as the new date to start the 5G auction. The bidders have already been informed of the new dates, giving them around three months to prepare for the procedure.

City of Vienna to subsidise 5G mobile stations from July

The city of Vienna plans to subsidize the expansion of 5G networks from July of mobile operators A1, Magenta Telekom and Hutchison Drei, Der Standard reports. From this summer, each new station installed is supported with a financial aid of EUR 27,500, 'representing EUR 5,500 per year for five years, and accounting for around half of the total costs. Austrian regulator postpones 5G auction due to Covid-19 crisis

Austrian regulator RTR said that the 5G auction scheduled for April will be postponed due to the Covid-19 crisis, Der Standard report. The government in Austria has taken restrictive measures to halt the spread of the virus. For this reason, the auction will not take place in April, and a new date has not been decided yet.
