Chile prepares 5G tender in 700MHz and 3.5GHz bands
Chilean telecommunications regulator Subtel announced at MWC 2019 that it plans to auction a total of 60MHz of 5G-ready frequencies in the 700MHz and 3.5GHz bands. The auction is designed to increase the number of participants in the future 5G network, bearing in mind only two operators are currently in a position to provide such services on the 3.5GHz band even though there are 5 operators with allocated spectrum. In a statement, Subtel said foreign operators have expressed an interest in entering the Chilean market by taking part in the tender and that the first public consultation documents will be released at the end of next month.

The announcement comes after Subtel announced earlier this month that it would be authorising operators to carry out pilots of 5G network technologies in the 3.5GHz band. The watchdog said companies interested in conducting trials could apply for permission to develop and test 5G technology, above all in areas including Big Data, autonomous vehicles, telemedicine plus IoT in mining and agriculture.

Chile dismisses Movistar, Claro appeals against spectrum return process

Chile's antitrust court (TDLC - Tribunal de Defensa de la Libre Competencia) has dismissed appeals lodged by Claro (America Movil) and Movistar (Telefonica) against the schedule imposed by the country's telecommunications regulator (Subtel) to return mobile spectrum, reports La Tercera. The appeals were lodged in the wake of a Supreme Court judgment ordering both operators as well as rival Entel to return the spectrum secured in the 700MHz band tender in 2014.

Entel Chile, Ericsson, ABB conduct first industrial 5G trial in Santiago

Chilean telecommunications watchdog Subtel said local operator Entel has conducted the first trial of industrial 5G technology in the country together with Ericsson and the company ABB. The partners used the 5G network to remotely control machinery at the ABB University in Nunoa (Santiago) and then to activate a robotic arm located at the Santiago South headquarters of INACAP.

Entel Chile runs first remote ultrasound pilot on 5G network

Chilean telecommunications regulator Subtel announced that Entel conducted one of the first telemedicine pilots on a 5G network in the country after the government finally granted permission for trials earlier this year. Entel secured a 6-month permit to tests 5G on the 28GHz band, which it used to remotely control an ultrasound machine in a trial held at the Esteban Gumucio health centre in the La Granja district, the first test of its kind in Chile.

Chile launches public consultation on 5G tender plans

Chilean telecommunications regulator Subtel has announced the launch of the process to tender spectrum in the 700MHz, AWS, 3.5GHz and 28GHz bands with an invitation to all interested parties to comment on the proposed 5G-ready frequencies. "All players in the digital ecosystem have a responsibility to carry out this process in the best possible way so that all users can enjoy the benefits that this technology will bring," said telecommunications undersecretary Pamela Gidi in a statement.

WOM Chile, Huawei launch 5G trials

Chile's WOM has become the latest operator to launch 5G trials following rivals Entel, Claro and Movistar, reports website Pisapapeles. The company teamed up with technological partner Huawei for the tests conducted via 40MHz of available spectrum on the 3.5GHz band at its offices, rather than in the laboratories used by rival operators. The partners used a Huawei 5G router allowing download speeds of up to 2GB to carry out a number of trials, including watching 8K videos, reaching a maximum speed of 722Mbp

Subtel partially lifts 3.5GHz freeze, suggests raising spectrum caps

Chilean telecommunications regulator Subtel has submitted a request to the country's anti-trust tribunal (TDLC - Tribunal de Defensa de la Libre Competencia) to raise spectrum caps and at the same time announced that it will partially lift its previous decision to freeze use of the 3.5GHz band. The watchdog said 50 percent of the spectrum frozen in the 3.5GHz band would be restored to operators, with Entel now given a 50MHz block to develop services, while Claro, Movistar, VTR and GTD will have 30MHz.

Court upholds Subtel's decision to freeze 3.5GHz spectrum use

The court of appeals of Santiago has once again dismissed appeals lodged by the operators Entel and Claro against the decision of telecommunications regulator Subtel to freeze use of the 3.5GHz band in the country pending the completion of 5G testing in the spectrum, local daily El Mercurio reported. Subtel justified its move on the grounds that the spectrum is underused but lawyers for the two companies argued that the decision is arbitrary and illegal.

Chile's Subtel launches 5G consultation

Chile's telecommunications regulator Subtel has announced the launch of a public consultation into its 5G National Plan just a few weeks after freezing use of the 3.5GHz band in the country pending the completion of 5G testing. The watchdog said it will be seeking views from all stakeholders on objectives including potential services and applications, efficient spectrum management, regulatory principles, user rights, network security and a technology road map. The consultation is open until 23 August.

Chile prohibits use of 3.5GHz band during 5G network studies

Chile's telecommunications regulator Subtel has announced that all holders of concessions in the 3.5GHz band will be prohibited from using the corresponding spectrum until it completes in-depth tests on its possible deployment for 5G services. In a statement, the watchdog said it took the decision after detecting irregular or insufficient usage of spectrum concessions in a total of 60 localities throughout the country.

Gidi appointed head of Chile's Subtel

Chile's president-elect Sebastian Pinera has appointed Pamela Gidi as the head of the country's telecommunications regulator Subtel, reports business daily Diario Financiero. Gidi previously worked in the Chilean TV sector, occupying senior positions at state broadcaster TVN and as vice-president of digital marketing at DirecTV Latin America. She will be tasked with overseeing the transition to DTT and defining the standards for the adoption of 5G, among other challenges.
