The Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel) announced that local operators Altice Dominicana and Claro Dominicana were awarded 5G spectrum after bidding a total of USD 73.7 million for their concessions. Specifically, Claro (America Movil) agreed to pay USD 53.1 million while for a 70 MHz in block in the 3.3-3.4 GHz band, the 20-year concession amounting to USD 2.7 million a year, while Altice will shell out USD 20.6 million, or USD 1.4 million a year over 14 years, for 70 MHz in the 3.4-3.6 GHz band.
Rival operator Trilogy Dominicana (Viva) did not take part in the tender, with Indotel yet to confirm whether the tender of 5G-compatible frequencies in the 700 MHz band received any offers. However, the regulator previously confirmed the extension of operator concession contracts to 2041 (Claro), 2035 (Altice) and 2034 (Viva).
Viva currently has around 360,000 active mobile customers in the Dominican Republic, well behind Claro and Altice with 4.3 million and 2.6 million respectively.
