Claro Chile acquires Movistar's 1.9GHz block for USD 20 mln

Claro Chile (American Movil) has acquired a 10MHz block in the 1.9GHz band put up for sale by Movistar (Telefonica) to comply with a Supreme Court ruling, reports Diario Financiero. The resulting tender saw Claro outbid rival Wom after offering around USD 20 million for the concession, said the report, adding that the operator intends to use the spectrum block to strengthen and optimise its voice and data transmission capacity in the coming months.

In October 2019, the Supreme Court ordered Movistar as well as Claro and Entel to return excess spectrum secured in the 700MHz band tender in 2014. Last month the country's ministry of transport and telecommunications (MTT) received offers from five different companies in the country’s delayed 5G spectrum tender. 

A total of 1,800 MHz of spectrum will be awarded in the 700 MHz, AWS (1,800 and 2,100 MHz), 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz bands. Barring legal challenges, the results of the tender will be announced in February 2021.

Movistar Chile, MTT set up eight new 5G campuses

Chile's telecommunications regulator Subtel announced that the country's ministry of transport and telecommunications (MTT) has teamed up with Movistar (Telefonica) and ten higher education and research institutions to set up eight 5G campuses across four Chilean regions. The "5G Movistar Experience" project was launched by transport and telecom minister Gloria Hutt around five months after the government created the first 5G campus in Chile in association with Entel.

Claro Chile acquires 30 MHz spectrum block from Entel ahead of 5G rollout

Claro Chile (America Movil) has confirmed the acquisition of a 30 MHz block in the 3.5 GHz band from rival Entel to boost its nationwide coverage ahead of the rollout of 5G. The concession is valid until 2031 and the deal comes after Claro failed to secure any spectrum in February's tender of 150 MHz of frequencies in the 3.5 GHz band. Entel was required to divest part of its mid-band holdings to comply with new spectrum caps determined by Chile's Supreme Court.

Chile raises over USD 450 mln in 5G spectrum tenders

Chilean telecommunications regulator Subtel said it raised a total of CLP 249 billion (around USD 453 million) in a series of tenders of 5G frequencies held this month, culminating in the auction of 150 MHz of frequencies in the 3.5 GHz band. The record figure is over 500 percent higher than the USD 74 million collected by the state in previous nationwide spectrum tenders, said the watchdog, adding that Chile is the first South American country to free up 5G spectrum on a national scale.

Chile's WOM awarded 30 MHz of AWS spectrum for CLP 16 bln

Chilean mobile operator WOM has secured 30MHz of spectrum in the AWS band just a few days after successfully bidding for 20 MHz of spectrum in the 700 MHz band. The second of four auctions for 5G-ready frequencies held by telecommunications regulator Subtel saw WOM easily outbid rivals rivals Claro (America Movil) and new entrant Borealnet with an offer of CLP 16.3 billion (around USD 22 million), some 300 percent higher than the previous AWS tender held over a decade ago, said Subtel.

Claro Chile revenues recover to 4% decline in Q4

America Movil's Claro Chile unit reported a 3.8 percent year-on-year decline in total revenues to CLP 203.1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2020, substantially improving trends following falls of 6.6 percent and 14.1 percent in the Covid-affected second and third quarters. Fourth-quarter service revenues were down 5.7 percent, an improvement on the previous quarter thanks in part to rises in broadband and pay-TV service revenues of 9.5 percent and 2.6 percent respectively.

WOM secures 700 MHz concession in Chile spectrum tender

Chilean mobile operator WOM has successfully bid for 20 MHz of spectrum in the 700 MHz band in the first of four auctions for 5G-ready frequencies. In a statement, telecommunications regulator Subtel said WOM offered CLP 60.7 billion (around USD 82 million) for the 2×10 MHz block, beating new entrant Borealnet after the operators were technically tied in the first round.

Movistar renews legal challenge against Chile 5G auction

Chile's telecommunications regulator Subtel announced that closed envelope auctions will be held next month to assign 5G frequencies in the 700MHz, AWS and 3.5GHz bands, while spectrum in the 26GHz band will be allocated without a tender. Movistar Chile to sell 1.9GHz concession following court ruling

Movistar Chile (Telefonica) is about to launch a new private tender to sell part of its mobile spectrum rights over two years after the Supreme Court first ordered the company to return the concession, reports Diario Financiero. The operator will put up for sale a 10MHz block in the 1.9GH to comply with the Supreme Court's final ruling of October 2019 ordering Movistar as well as rivals Claro (America Movil) and Entel to return excess spectrum secured in the 700MHz band tender in 2014.
