Dish picks Mavenir software for OpenRAN

Dish Network announced a multi-year agreement with Mavenir to use its cloud-native OpenRAN software. Dish is deploying the OpenRAN system on its new mobile network under construction in the US. 

Mavenir will help lay the foundation "for an innovative software-defined network with the flexibility, intelligence and scalability to deliver applications that will redefine the US wireless industry", Dish said in a statement, while noting also its reliance on US-based suppliers.

Mavenir said the contract involves the deployment of the world's largest cloud-native OpenRAN 5G network.

Of the 250,000 subscribers removed from the company's base in the previous quarter as a temporary move related to covid-19 measures, 45,000 have resume normal service. Dish had paused service or provided temporary rate relief for these accounts in an effort to avoid charging commercial customers for services that were no longer being viewed due to disruptions caused by the crisis.

Dish makes new hires, promotions, with eye on mobile expansion

US pay-TV operator Dish Network has made a number of executive appointments, with the aim of advancing its mobile future, it said. First, the company has hired Dave Mayo as executive VP for Network Development. A former T-Mobile US senior VP, Mayo will be responsible for Dish's mobile buildout strategy and how it deploys its standalone 5G network. He will join Dish from 1 June and reports to co-founder and chairman Charlie Ergen.

Dish Q1 profit falls on writedowns, bigger subscriber loss

US pay-TV operator Dish Network reported a drop in first-quarter net profit to USD 73 million from USD 340 million a year ago, hurt by impairment charges to write down the value of its narrowband IoT network, which it no longer expects to complete, and the D1 and T1 satellites. The company also reported an increase in net subscriber losses to 419,000, as the coronavirus pandemic led to the disconnection of many customers in the hospitality and airline sectors.

Turkcell to deploy OpenRAN vRAN with Mavenir

Mavenir has entered a business partnership with Turkcell. The two companies will together test and deploy an OpenRAN vRAN within the Turkcell Group, initially in the home market Turkey. The partnership will start directly with fully containerised CU/DU and Open FH with Split 7.2 in trial and planned deployments, which will be a first in the industry, Mavenir said. The virtual RAN platform will be deployed on Turkcell Telco Cloud and it will be the first workload to go live on the Turkcell Edge Cloud.
