Disney debuts Disney+ in US at USD 6.99, with aim of going global within 2 years

Disney will be launching its new Disney+ streaming service first in the US on 12 November, priced at USD 6.99 per month. The company will then quickly expand the subscription VOD service worldwide, with the goal of covering nearly all major regions within the coming two years. The plans were announced during the company’s Investor Day. 

Disney said the service will be easy to navigate and viewers will be able to create custom profiles with curated content. The service will be available on a wide range of mobile and connected TV devices, including gaming consoles, streaming media players, and smart TVs. Disney said the channel will adjust to the best possible high definition viewing experience based on a subscriber’s available bandwidth, with support for up to 4K HDR video playback. There will be content as well for offline viewing. 

Original content

The service will feature content from all of Disney’s brands, including Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic, as well as original content. Disney said it will be releasing over 25 original series and 10 original films, documentaries, and specials. New original titles from Marvel Studios will include “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” (with Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan), “WandaVision” (with Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany), and “Marvel’s What If…? Animated series ,” the first animated series from Marvel Studios. From Walt Disney Animation Studios, there will be the “Into the Unknown: Making Frozen 2” documentary series. 

From Pixar Animation Studios, features will include Toy Story-based projects such as “Forky Asks a Question” and a “Lamp Life” short film. From National Geographic, there will be “The World According to Jeff Goldblum” documentary series and the “Magic of the Animal Kingdom” documentary series. From Disney Television Animation, viewers will get “The Phineas and Ferb Movie” animated film. 

These titles will join previously announced scripted originals including “The Mandalorian” scripted live-action Star Wars series, the exclusive new season of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series,” the untitled Cassian Andor series starring Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk, the Marvel Studios series “Loki” starring Tom Hiddleston, “Monsters at Work,” “Diary of a Female President,” and live-action films “Lady and the Tramp,” “Noelle,” “Togo,” Timmy Failure” and “Stargirl.” Nonfiction series will include “Be Our Chef,” “Cinema Relics: Iconic Art of the Movies,” “Earthkeepers,” “Encore!,” the untitled Walt Disney Imagineering documentary series, “Marvel’s 616,” “Marvel’s Hero Project,” “(Re)Connect,” “Rogue Trip,” and “Shop Class.”

Fox content

The channel will have all 30 seasons of “The Simpsons” and family-friendly Fox titles like “The Sound of Music,” “The Princess Bride,” and “Malcolm in the Middle”, following Disney's takeover of the Fox studios. In general, there will be a library of more than 7,500 television episodes and 500 films available on the service.
