Disney may first test its upcoming Disney+ streaming service in the Netherlands before launching it formally in the US, The Information reported, citing anonymous sources. Disney gave a name to its new streaming service in November, which it hopes will take on Netflix. The service will be introduced late this year with productions from Disney itself, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic.
Disney hopes to unveil the streaming service on 11 April. The beta version in the Netherlands would trouble shoot for technical problems before the wider launch.
The OTT video market is in the US still controlled by the major internet companies, namely Netflix, YouTube and Amazon. A new crop of companies are coming on board however and plan to introduce new services this year and the next. WarnerMedia and NBC Universal are all developing new services. They hope to compete with Netflix using their large portfolios. Apple is also working on its own video streaming service.
Walt Disney Studios includes Touchstone Pictures, Pixar and Disney Animation. After the acquisition of 21st Century Fox, it also has 20th Century Fox, Fox Searchlight and other Fox assets.
