Thai mobile operators Dtac and AIS have won spectrum in the 1,800 MHz band with bids of THB 12.5 billion (EUR 330 million) each. The only two bidders in the auction each acquired 15-year licences for 2x5 MHz.
The companies must pay 50 percent of the purchase price within 90 days of the official auction results notification from the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, another 25 percent within two years and the remaining 25 percent within three years.
AIS plans to use the extra spectrum to strengthen its 4G services, while Dtac will be able to maintain services when some of its frequencies expire later this year. The other operators did not participate in the auction despite more spectrum offered, including in the 900 MHz band, due to high reserve prices.
