Facebook tests Wi-Fi check-in at local businesses
Facebook is testing a project known as Facebook Wi-Fi that provides free internet to customers who have a Facebook account and "check-in" at participating businesses, according to the Los Angeles Times. Businesses such as retail stores and coffee shops near Facebook's California headquarters in Menlo Park are using a router provided free of charge to test out the new programme, according to a Facebook spokeswoman. When users check-in they have access to the business location's Wi-Fi network and are directed to the stores' Facebook Page before they are granted access to the internet. Users who do not want to disclose the location on their personal Facebook page can set the audience setting to "only me" during the check-in process, the article said. In addition, customers will typically have to fill out a form or survey or watch an ad before they are given access to the internet. Users who do not want to check-in or do not have a Facebook account can still gain access to the Internet by using the businesses Wi-Fi password. Currently, Facebook Wi-Fi is still in the test stage.
