FB, Google, TE, PLDC to build undersea cable from HK to LA

Facebook, Google, TE Connectivity’s TE SubCom, and PLDC (Pacific Light Data Communication) have announced plans to co-build the Pacific Light Cable Network (PLCN), a 12,800 km transpacific submarine cable system that will provide the first direct undersea route between Hong Kong and Los Angeles, California with ultra-high capacity transmission. The route is expected to commercially launch in the summer of 2018.

It will include TE SubCom's C+L technology, with cable transmission capacity double the available bandwidth and capacity per fibre pair over a traditional C-band-only designed system. Once completed, PLCN will be the highest-capacity transpacific route.

US officials are seeking to block an undersea cable backed by Google, Facebook and a Chinese partner in a national-security review, people involved in the discussions told the Wall Street Journal. The Justice Department, which leads a multiagency panel that reviews telecommunications matters, has signaled opposition to the project because of concerns over its Chinese investor, Beijing-based Dr. Peng Telecom & Media Group Co, and the direct link to Hong Kong the cable would provide, the report said.

Google to build 3 new subsea cables, add 5 regions to cloud service

Google has announced plans to commission three new undersea cables and add five regions to its cloud network in a bid to further expand its infrastructure and provide faster and more reliable connectivity for internet users. Chinese developer backs Google, Facebook trans-Pacific cable

Chinese real-estate developer Wei Junkang is financing Google's and Facebook's new trans-Pacific internet cable. The project will be majority-owned by the Chinese company, The WSJ reports. Junkang is the main financier of the cable between Los Angeles and Hong Kong. As part of the USD 500 million project, Google and Facebook will deploy "the world's highest-capacity internet link" between Asia and the US.

Facebook developing censorship software for China - report

Facebook is quietly developing a sort of "censorship" software for China, the New York Times reported. The software would stop certain posts from appearing in people's news feeds in specific geographic areas, according to anonymous sources among current and former employees. The feature was created to help Facebook get into China, a market where the social network has been blocked, these people said. Customers seeking a single point of contact for both wet plant and dry plant will have the option to combine TE SubCom's wet plant designs and marine installation with Ciena's 6500 Packet-Optical Platform, powered by WaveLogic coherent optics, to create an undersea cable system.

Seacom says it has identified a shunt fault in the Mediterranean Sea between Egypt and France. All transmission traffic on the East Coast of Africa to and from Europe will be affected.
