Global smartphone shipments to grow 7.4% to 1.37 billion in 2021 - IDC

Global smartphone shipments are forecast to grow by 7.4 percent to 1.37 billion units in 2021, followed by growth of 3.4 percent in 2022 and 2023 respectively, according to the latest Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker data from IDC.

The 7.4 percent growth forecast for 2021 will be driven by 13.8 percent growth in iOS device and 6.2 percent growth in Android device shipments. The world's largest markets - China, US and W Europe - will still be lower than 2019, with the recovering led by growing markets such as India, Japan, Africa and the Middle East.

5G shipments will be a primary growth driver in 2021 as vendors and the channel focus on 5G devices with a higher average selling price (ASP) compared to older 4G smartphones. The ASP of a 5G smartphone is expected to be USD 634 in 2021, compared to USD 632 in 2020; with the ASP of a 4G device falling to USD 206, down almost 30 percent from USD 277 in 2020. Total 5G smartphone shipments will reach 570 million units in 2021, up 123.4 percent year-on-year, with China accounting for 47.1 percent, followed by the US at 16 percent, India with 6.1 percent, and Japan with 4.1 percent. 5G devices will account for more than half (54.1%) of global smartphone shipments by end-2022.
