Global smartphone shipments to return to growth in 2020 - IDC
Worldwide smartphone shipments are expected to be nearly flat (-0.4%) in the second half of 2019, an improvement on falls of 2.3 percent and 6.6 percent in the first two quarters of the year, before returning to growth next year, according to a report from IDC. Overall, the market is set to decline 2.2 percent year on year in 2019, the third straight year of global contraction, before posting a 1.6 percent shipment growth in 2020.

Although ongoing US-China trade tensions and global economic uncertainty are still dominating headlines, the report expects aggressive promotions and offers as well as the anticipation of 5G to steer the market back into positive territory. The researcher said 5G shipments are set to reach 8.9 percent of smartphones shipped in 2020, accounting for 123.5 million devices, before growing to 28.1 percent of worldwide smartphone shipments by 2023.

In terms of platforms,  Android's smartphone dominance is set to increase to 87.0 percent in 2019 from 85.1 percent in 2018 mostly due to 5G launches and expedited inventory cleanup of older devices, with iOS accounting for the remaining 13.0 percent on shipments of 177.9 million, down 14.8 percent year on year, due to market maturity as well as a lack of 5G devices.
