Google has finalised installing and testing its 10,500-kilometre Curie undersea cable linking the coast of California to the port of Valparaiso in Chile around 6 months after landing. The company is now connecting the private cable to its network and expects it to begin transmitting data in the second quarter of 2020, delivering 72 Tbps of bandwidth to South America. Curie is the first subsea cable to connect to Chile in 19 years and was built in partnership with SubCom.
Google also confirmed that Curie will be branching to Panama with a view to enhancing connectivity and bandwidth to Central America, and providing resiliency to its global cloud infrastructure. SubCom has again been selected to supply the Curie branch to Panama, and will also be working with Google on the Dunant cable connecting the US to Europe. Google has also commissioned a third private cable – called Equiano – which will route from Portugal to South Africa and will be built by Alcatel Submarine Networks.
