Huawei files EC complaint over InterDigital licensing
Huawei announced that it has filed an anti-trust complaint with the European Commission against US-based InterDigital. InterDigital holds a number of patents for technology essential to the UMTS standard.

Huawei has been trying to negotiate a licence with InterDigital to use the patented technology in its mobile devices, but has been unable to reach an agreement. The Chinese company said that InterDigital is trying to force Huawei to conclude a "discriminatory, unfair and exploitative licence" for the patents, which is in violation of obligations to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute to license standards-essential patents on FRAND terms. Huawei called on the EC to intervene to end the alleged abuses by InterDigital.

InterDigital said in a statement that it had not seen the complaint filed by Huawei, so could not comment. The company noted that it continues to license its patented technology in line with terms agreed with standards bodies.

In July 2011, InterDigital filed its own patent suit against Huawei, along with Nokia and ZTE, alleging they violated its patents with their 3G mobile devices. The suit is pending at the International Trade Commission and in US federal court.
