Huawei to supply 4G/LTE, 5G radio equipment to Malaysia's Maxis

Malaysia operator Maxis has selected Huawei Technologies Malaysia for the deployment of its 5G network across the country. Under the terms of the deal, Huawei will supply 4G/LTE and 5G radio equipment and services for Maxis. Maxis plans to upgrade its existing LTE network to be 5G-ready. Maxis will also have access to insights, standards, products and services to support its 5G deployment and launch of 5G use cases in Malaysia. Huawei will also set up a team of experts to support Maxis on a series of technical training programmes on planning, operations and maintenance of its 5G network.

Back in February this year, Maxis and Huawei signed an agreement to cooperate on full-fledged 5G trials. In its 5G live trials, Maxis reports it has achieved download speeds of up to 3Gbps.

Maxis also recently completed the deployment of an intelligent network, dubbed the ‘A.I. Network’, which is ready to support 5G speeds. Developed with Maxis’ in-house capabilities, the A.I. Network is built on 5G-ready infrastructure with fibre-optic footprint to mobile base stations across the country.

Huawei is currently facing growing backlash in various countries, after the US government has alleged that Huawei’s 5G tech could enable the Chinese government to spy on other countries and has urged allies to ban the company. Huawei has repeatedly denied that its products represent any risks. The company is currently facing a ban on US companies doing business with the group, which has limited its choice of suppliers for key products such as its latest flagship smartphone. US government agencies are also banned from using Huawei products.
