US govt to soon start issuing sales licenses to Huawei - report
As China and the US prepare for a fresh round of talks this week, the US is expected to soon issue licenses allowing some US companies to supply non-sensitive goods to Huawei, the New York Times reported. The government last week said it would start approving licenses for a few US companies. Licenses can be given for products exempted from the blacklist, non-sensitive items that could readily be replaced by foreign competitors. The US Commerce Department has received over 130 applications from companies looking for licenses to sell US goods to Huawei, Reuters reported in August.

The strict tariff rules, enacted in May, stop Huawei from buying parts and components from US companies without US government approval, limiting its access to essential technologies such as Google Mobile Services, for example.

The licensing decisions will give some clarity to US companies, which have been looking for guidance since President Donald Trump promised to provide some relief to firms that did business with Huawei.
