IBM pulls out of San Francisco's RSA Conference

IBM has decided not to attend San Francisco’s RSA Conference, an annual meeting of cybersecurity specialists, the company announced in a tweet, first sighted by LightReading. The move comes on concerns around the Coronavirus epidemic. The RSA Conference holders said they were paying “close attention” to the new developments around the virus. 

The GSMA earlier this month cancelled the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona due to the same concerns, and after many companies pulled out of the annual event.

Apple says Q2 sales to fall short as Coronavirus slows iPhone supplies worldwide

Apple said slower production due to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) means it will not be able to meet expectations for the fiscal second quarter to end March. The company had guided for revenue of USD 63-97 billion from 58 billion the year before, and a gross margin of 38-39 percent. The company noted that the disruption to results is only temporary and that its business is fundamentally strong.

HKBN extends flexible work-from-home initiative until 15 March

Hong Kong operator HKBN has extended its work-from-home initiative from 1 March to 15 March. HKBN office and back-end support employees in Hong Kong (including Hong Kong Broadband Network, HKBN Enterprise Solutions and JOS) will continue to be able to flexibly work from home until 15 March 2020. The decision follows the coronavirus epidemic developments and Education Bureau's recent extension of the classroom closure period.

Alibaba grows quarterly revenues 38%, net profit up 62%

Alibaba's revenue growth slowed again the December quarter, despite its annual Singles Day event. Revenues rose 38 percent year-on-year to CNY 161.5 billion (USD 23.2 billion), slowing from annual growth of 40 and 42 percent in the two previous quarters. Adjusted EBITDA for the fiscal third quarter was up 37 percent to CNY 55.9 billion, and net profit increased 62 percent to CNY 50.1 billion.

The GSMA has cancelled Mobile World Congress, its flagship event scheduled for later this month in Barcelona. The industry group said "the global concern regarding the coronavirus outbreak, travel concern and other circumstances, make it impossible for the GSMA to hold the event".

Deutsche Telekom withdraws from MWC

Deutsche Telekom announced that it will not attend the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The company said on Twitter that "the health of the employees and all of the guests there comes first," with a reference to the coronavirus outbreak. Deutsche Telekom is the latest of a number of companies that have decided to pull out from MWC.

The GSMA is going ahead with Mobile World Congress for now, Spanish paper El Pais reports. The decision was taken at a virtual board meeting on 11 February, which was called to discuss whether to cancel the annual show due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Intel, Vivo, Amdocs, MediaTek withdraw from Mobile World Congress

Amdocs also issued a statement saying it would not attend MWC due to health concerns. Instead, it will visit customers at their offices to present its products. Commscope said it is looking at similar options, after deciding not to attend in Barcelona, and MediaTek posted the same type of statement on Twitter, saying it's withdrawing from the event. Ciena said it would put the health of its employees, customers and partners first and would not attend MWC either.
