Intel sets up dedicated Artificial Intelligence unit

Intel has announced plans to create a single Artificial Intelligence (AI) group under Naveen Rao, former CEO of deep learning specialist Nervana, acquired by Intel last year. Reporting directly to Intel CEO Brian Krzanich, the new pan-Intel body will be called Artificial Intelligence Products Group (AIPG) and will align resources from across the company to include engineering, labs, software and more on the basis of the Nervana hardware and software stack. “Intel intends to rally the industry around a set of standards for AI that ultimately brings down costs and makes AI more accessible to more people,” said Rao in a statement.

As part of the plans, Intel is also setting up an applied AI research lab dedicated to pushing AI technology and focusing on novel architectural and algorithmic approaches including a range of solutions from the data centre to edge devices, and from training to inference.

Intel's decision to create a dedicated AI unit comes after it acquired Altera for USD 17 billion at the end of 2015 and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) specialist Mobileye for USD 15 billion last month.
